Facebook is changing its policy, shortly you will no longer be able to ask users directly to Like your page, time to improve your content!

It is likely you will have seen your Facebook newsfeed inundated with your Friends sharing content to enter competitions. Usually these promotions are set up by business pages, they ask users to enter to win a prize by liking their page and/or sharing a post or image. However, Facebook no longer wants pages to incentivise users to like pages by offering rewards. This Facebook like policy will come into action on the 5th of November and non-compliance could result in a post being removed or a page being blocked.

However could this be seen as a good thing? The new rule ensures that Likes are real, with users having a genuine interest in the business not just entering a competition and then remaining dormant. The policy should increase engagement and help businesses to reach users who matter to them. But it is likely many business users may have to rethink their strategy to increase their following.

One way to improve post reach is to ensure posts and their content to be of the highest quality. Adding photos, videos and links to posts is more likely catch the eye of users but will also increase reach especially if it has many shares, likes and comments. Businesses will now have to up their game to improve their content, posts and engagement on social media to reach more people.

The new ruling comes into effect 5th November 2014.
